Re: Accessible Technology Initiative (ATI)
San Diego State University is committed to providing an educational environment that assures individuals with disabilities equivalent access to information resources and technology. The California State University system has established the Accessible Technology Initiative to ensure compliance with federal and state accessibility laws. The Chancellor’s Office recently released Coded Memo AA 2007-04 (Access to Electronic and Information Technology for Persons with Disabilities), which details the requirements in support of this important effort. At SDSU, we have embarked on an Accessible Technology Initiative (ATI) <http://access.sdsu.edu/> in order to meet these objectives.
This initiative is a collaborative project across all of our divisions and auxiliary organizations. The SDSU initiative is led by the ATI Steering Committee, chaired by Rich Pickett, Sr. Director Information Technology & Chief Information Officer, and focuses on accessibility in three areas: 1) Web sites and applications, 2) instructional materials, and 3) electronic and information technology procurement. Our commitment will be permanent, extending past the initial phases of this initiative.
These efforts will proceed in accordance with the timeline specified by the Chancellor’s Coded Memo <http://access.sdsu.edu/atitimeline.htm>. Our initial work this spring will concentrate on the development of plans to ensure our campus provides an environment that is accessible to all individuals as well as to evaluate and remediate a selection of campus Web pages.
This initiative will involve faculty, staff, and students across our campus. Only through the cooperative efforts of everyone will we be able to offer the SDSU community equal access to our educational resources.
